adobe acrobat reader toolbar missing in browser - solution

After several updates (windows 7, firefox, etc)  I realized that I was no longer seeing the tool bar for acrobat reader when a PDF opened within a browser. This is needed to save the PDF locally or to search within the PDF.

to see the toolbar again press F8

Generally I prefer to open a PDF outside of the browser. For some reason adobe reader X is not obeying my preference deselection for "open PDF in browser" in conjunction with firefox 7.

  1. I can't find my tool bar either, and F8 doesn't work. Based on my experiences with Acrobat, and Flash Player, Adobe doesn't take much pride in its products.

  2. thanks for the comment.

firefox has now been released with non-Adobe "built-in" PDF rendering. which means it's not the same situation as before.

    *sigh*

there's probably an easy way to make Acrobat Reader the default program to handle PDFs. I just haven't looked it up yet.

"Firefox introduces PDF viewer to browse the Web without interruption

    Feb 19 2013

Firefox for Windows, Mac and Linux introduces a built-in browser PDF viewer that allows you to read PDFs directly within the browser, making reading PDFs easier because you don’t have to download the content or read it in a plugin like Reader. For example, you can use the PDF viewer to check out a menu from your favorite restaurant, view and print concert tickets or read reports without having to interrupt your browsing experience with extra clicks or downloads"
