godspeed! wins prize, re-educates organizers, sets up cool programme with the cash
Godspeed You! Black Emperor later issued the following statement.
A FEW WORDS REGARDING THIS POLARIS PRIZE THING
hello kanada.
hello kanadian music-writers.
thanks for the nomination thanks for the prize- it feels nice to be acknowledged by the Troubled Motherland when we so often feel orphaned here. and much respect for all y’all who write about local bands, who blow that horn loudly- because that trumpeting is crucial and necessary and important.
and much respect to the freelancers especially, because freelancing is a hard fucking gig, and almost all of us are freelancers now, right? falling and scrambling and hustling through these difficult times?
so yes, we are grateful, and yes we are humble and we are shy to complain when we’ve been acknowledged thusly- BUT HOLY SHIT AND HOLY COW- we’ve been plowing our field on the margins of weird culture for almost 20 years now, and “this scene is pretty cool but what it really fucking needs is an awards show” is not a thought that’s ever crossed our minds.
3 quick bullet-points that almost anybody could agree on maybe=
give the money to the kids let ‘em put on their own goddamn parties, give the money to the olds and let them try to write opuses in spite of, but let the muchmusic videostars fight it out in the inconsequential middle, without gov’t. culture-money in their pockets.
us we’re gonna use the money to try to set up a program so that prisoners in quebec have musical instruments if they need them…
amen and amen.
apologies for being such bores,
we love you so much / our country is fucked,

- holding a gala during a time of austerity and normalized decline is a weird thing to do.
- organizing a gala just so musicians can compete against each other
for a novelty-sized cheque doesn’t serve the cause of righteous music
at all.
- asking the toyota motor company to help cover the tab for that gala, during a summer where the melting northern ice caps are live-streaming on the internet, IS FUCKING INSANE, and comes across as tone-deaf to the current horrifying malaise.

Mute and Spoon are delighted to announce the release of the long-awaited remastered catalogue vinyl box set, a 17 piece vinyl set on 180g vinyl housed in a linen wrapped box, out on 2 December 2013.
The box set features 13 of the band’s classic albums, alongside Out Of Reach, which has been unavailable in any official format since its original release in 1978 plus Can Live, a bonus live disc featuring the classic Can line up of Holger Czukay (bass), Michael Karoli (guitar), Jaki Liebezeit (drums) and Irmin Schmidt (keyboards) Can Live was recorded at Sussex University in 1975 and will be unavailable in any format outside of the Can Vinyl Box.

Can Live, Sussex University 1975
Can was founded in 1968 by Irmin Schmidt, Holger Czukay, Michael Karoli and Jaki Liebezeit who formed a group which would utilise and transcend all boundaries of ethnic, electronic experimental and modern classical music. The box reflects the changing eras of the band, the different powerful singers like Malcom Mooney and Damo Suzuki and collaborators such as Reebob Kwaku and Rosko Gee.
The band’s powerful influence has never diminished, and their indelible mark is apparent in the bands who freely acknowledge their importance – from Portishead, James Murphy, New Order, Factory Floor, Public Image Ltd, Mogwai, Kanye West (who sampled ‘Sing Swan Song’) and Radiohead – as well as across other disciplines such as visual art and literature.
Can Vinyl Box follows the phenomenal success of 2011’s 40th anniversary release of Tago Mago (awarded 5* from MOJO, Uncut, Artrocker and Record Collector), The Lost Tapes (which featured heavily in the Albums of the Year 2012) and this year’s Cyclopean EP (Irmin Schmidt, Jaki Liebezeit, Kumo, and Burnt Friedman)
The Can Vinyl Box was mastered and cut to vinyl by Kevin Metcalfe at The Soundmasters, London. Remasters and vinyl processing was coordinated by long time collaborator, Jono Podmore.

what is and isn't "art" / false market construction and impact
how classic is this?
They are counterfeit / fake only in that they were attributed to famous artists and therefore sold for a lot of money. Does the revelation mean that viewers should no longer appreciate them for their qualities?
She admitted in court that the works of art "were actually fakes created by an individual residing in Queens''.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24124107
The artist who painted the fakes, 73-year-old Pei-Shen Qian, won't be charged and has returned to his native China, prosecutors said.
The paintings were said to be never-before-exhibited and previously unknown works of art by artists including Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.

Britain's tax exiles of the 1960s
Dr Desmond Morris
Our Director, Dr Desmond Morris, has written an important and fascinating book 'The Naked Ape' which has had widespread success even before publication.
Owing to the present system of taxation which is particularly inconsiderate towards authors and artists in general we are now faced with the probability that he will be forced to move out of this country if he is to retain more than an absurdly small fraction of his legitimate and in this case unprecedented earnings.
It seems unlikely that this situation can be avoided and in consequence we can only congratulate him on his good fortune and prepare with great regret to part company.
A further announcement of future plans for the ICA at this crucial time will appear in the next Bulletin.
- tipped in sheet, ica bulletin, October 1967, number 174.

Google Ends SMS Search Service
in another move which violates the "don't be evil" prime directive you can no longer get simple search results by texting a message to 466453
attention google: not everything needs to be monetized, fuckers.
"Google's decision to shut down the SMS search service only serves to widen the information divide between the haves and have-nots," wrote user dadamn in a May 10 post. "I could always get some info via the very simple text message—an address and phone number for a business can be very handy in a pinch, or when traveling. For those of us who can't afford a data plan or smartphone, or for those who aren't techno-savvy enough to navigate the web on a cellphone or learn a new 'app world,' the SMS has helped us to function in a society that increasingly assumes everyone worth reaching has a smartphone. Google, I'll challenge you to take a look at this service from a social-justice lens. Please cut the crap about 'beautiful technology that will improve people's lives' when you're only talking about improving things for the techno-elite."

sexual assults in the military
Sexual assaults in the military are a growing epidemic across the

despite a slew of new oversight and assistance programs, according to a
new Pentagon report.
Troubling new numbers estimate that up to 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year

EFF 2013 Who Has Your Back report on internet companies and data protection
When you use the Internet, you entrust your conversations, thoughts,
experiences, locations, photos, and more to companies like Google,
AT&T and Facebook. But what do these companies do when the
government demands your private information? Do they stand with you? Do
they let you know what’s going on?
In this annual report, the Electronic Frontier Foundation examined the policies of major Internet companies — including ISPs, email providers, cloud storage providers, location-based services, blogging platforms, and social networking sites — to assess whether they publicly commit to standing with users when the government seeks access to user data. The purpose of this report is to incentivize companies to be transparent about how data flows to the government and encourage them to take a stand for user privacy whenever it is possible to do so.

NJABL is shutting down - not just another black list - spam black list
The njabl.org DNSBL is in the process of shutting down. On March 1, 2013, the various njabl.org DNSBL zones were all emptied. Any systems configured to use any of the NJABL DNSBL zones should be reconfigured immediately to no longer use the NJABL DNSBL zones.
Today, April 29, 2013, NS for the NJABL DNSBL zones is being pointed into 192.0.2.0/24 (TEST-NET-1) which is unrouted IP space. This will likely cause any systems using the NJABL DNSBL zones to experience long delays in DNS resolution of NJABL DNSBL lookups. This is being done both to sink the DNS query traffic and to hopefully be noticed by the owners/managers of those systems.
